The first All Africa Amputee Soccer Tournament got underway Friday, February 9, with opening ceremonies and opening matches in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Published reports said s many as 10,000 spectators crowded the National Stadium in Freetown to witness the ground-breaking event.
Teams said to be participating include Sierra Leone, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and Tanzania.
Jim Frere, Amputee Football Liaison / Development Officer for Africa, said
The tournament is being held with the intention of putting the word "pride" into disabled sport within Africa.
He said the tournament would also demonstrate to sports organizations outside the region that such tournaments can be organized with efficiency and provide a high standard of skill/stamina and spectator entertainment.
The tournament is sponsored by FIFA.

Ignacio Medrano
Amputee Soccer and American Team Co-Captain Ignacio Medrano are featured in a one-minute Ford Motor Co. TV commercial which debuted throughout the USA during the finals of "American Idol," May 2.
Medrano is one of 2 adaptive community elements in the "Ford Bold" commercial series.
In addition to being included in the 60-second commercial, there's also a possibility that he and our game wi'll be featured in a separate 30-second commercial as well.
